About the brand

Why we at Vivifying sell a leash next to a spool of twine

It began with a spool of twine

We started in 2016 with two things a household uses up: twine and wash bags. Neither is exciting. Both get bought again, and people remember which spool tangled and which bag lost its zipper in the first wash.

So we wrote the numbers on everything. A spool says how many feet are on it and how thick the twine is. A wash bag says its size in inches. If you know what you are tying or washing, you can pick without guessing.

The twine went to gardeners tying tomatoes, to cooks trussing a roast, and to people re-wrapping a cat's scratching post. We learned from all three. Gardeners wanted green that hides among leaves. Cooks wanted plain cotton with no dye. Cat owners wanted rope thick enough to last a year.

A 3 mm, 3-ply jute twine in 328 ft spools, strong enough for tomatoes and soft enough not to cut the stem.

Then the dog got into the range

Pets arrived the way they arrive in any home: one at a time, and then they run the place. A recovery cone came first, because a vet's plastic cone is heavy and ours could be lighter. Long leashes followed, then snuffle mats, then a car seat for the dog who rides in a lap.

We kept the habit from the twine. A cone gives the neck size it fits. A sling gives the weight it lifts. A leash gives its length and what the line is made of.

Each new product answered a note from a buyer. A swimmer's owner asked for a line that floats, so we made one from rope that takes in no water. A muddy field asked for webbing that rinses under a tap.

Sizes first, because returns are a nuisance

Most pet gear goes back for one reason: it did not fit. A cone that is too loose comes off in an hour. A bandana for a 13-inch neck will not tie round a 20-inch one.

We would rather you measure once. Our sizes run from a 5.6-inch cat neck to a 180 lb dog, and each one is a number you can check with a tape.

The same goes for the house. A wash bag is given in inches, and a spool in feet and millimetres. You should not have to open the parcel to learn what size it is.

    Vivifying Dog Rear Lift Sling

A padded sling that goes under the belly so you can take the weight off weak back legs on stairs and into the car.

Where each product stops

A felt snuffle mat is not a chew toy. A rope leash is not chew-proof. A booster seat keeps a small dog in place on a normal drive, and it is not a safety harness.

Buyers who know a product's limits before they order tend to keep what they bought. A leash that comes back chewed helps nobody.

It costs us a sale now and then. A person with a dog that shreds soft toys should buy the steel lick mat and skip the felt.

Steel, where plastic gave up

The newest Vivifying products are stainless steel: litter boxes with a steel pan, and a lick mat that goes in the dishwasher. Steel outlasts the claws and the teeth.

The range now runs to 48 products in 158 sizes and colours, from $5.76. The twine is still here. So are the wash bags.

We still answer the mail ourselves. If a size is missing or a description is unclear, tell us, and the next buyer gets a better answer.
